What to Bring

Faqs

This package will allow you to delve into crucial sites of Inca culture and Andean history:

  • Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun): The religious epicenter of the Tahuantinsuyo, dedicated to the god Inti (Sun). Its walls, covered in gold according to chroniclers, represent the pinnacle of Inca stonemasonry. The Santo Domingo Convent was built upon it, symbolizing colonial syncretism.
  • Sacsayhuamán: An imposing ceremonial complex with megalithic zigzag walls, an example of advanced Inca engineering. Scene of key battles during the conquest and today of the Inti Raymi festival.
  • Qenqo, Pukapukara & Tambomachay: Huacas (sacred places) and control sites near Cusco. Qenqo (“labyrinth”) with its carved altar and channels; Pukapukara (“red fortress”) as a watch post; and Tambomachay dedicated to water worship with its notable hydraulic system.
  • Chincheros: An Andean town keeping ancestral textile traditions alive, showcased in its craft centers. It also houses a colonial church with valuable paintings built on Inca foundations.
  • Moray: Enigmatic sunken circular terraces, interpreted as a sophisticated Inca agricultural experimentation center to adapt crops to different microclimates.
  • Maras Salt Mines (Salineras): Thousands of salt ponds exploited since pre-Inca times through solar evaporation, an ancestral technique still used by the local community.
  • Ollantaytambo: One of the few “living Inca towns,” with an original urban layout and an impressive archaeological complex that served as a fortress and ceremonial center, strategically located in the Sacred Valley.
  • Pisac: Known for its extensive mountaintop archaeological site, featuring terracing, temples, and an Inca cemetery, as well as its vibrant craft market in the town below.
  • Machu Picchu: The iconic Inca citadel, Pachacutec’s masterpiece, recognized as a World Wonder. Its complex planning, religious sectors (Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana), and agricultural areas (terraces) reflect the Inca worldview and skill.
  • Humantay Lagoon: A glacial lagoon of intense turquoise color, considered sacred due to its connection with Apu Humantay (tutelary mountain spirit), a source of water and life according to the Andean worldview.
  • Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): A spectacular geological phenomenon resulting from mineral oxidation. Its proximity to Apu Ausangate, one of Cusco’s most important mountain deities, adds profound cultural and spiritual value.
