DAY 1

Day 1AREQUIPA - SANGALLE

We will pick you up from your respective hotels starting at 3:00 am. In case your hotel is not on our pick-up route, the meeting point will be in front of the Cathedral at the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa. Our journey begins with a 4-hour drive to the town of Chivay, located at an altitude of 3400 meters above sea level. Here, we will have breakfast, traditional beverages, and take a break as part of the acclimatization process to the high altitude.

Next, we will head to the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, where you can admire one of the world’s deepest canyons. At this point, you’ll also find the condor sanctuary, offering a good chance of witnessing condors soaring above your head. You will have about 1 hour to purchase and memorize some souvenirs from the area.

We’ll then make our way to the town of Cabanaconde, where we will begin our descent into the Colca Canyon. During our journey, we’ll have various stops and breathtaking views. We will cross the Colca River via a handmade bridge and reach the village of San Juan de Chuccho. Here, you can take a rest and enjoy lunch at restaurants owned by local families.

We’ll continue our journey along a narrow and steep path towards Cosñirhua and then proceed along a flatter path to the small village of Malata. Finally, our trek will conclude in Sangalle, also known as the Oasis. It’s a beautiful place nestled amidst the canyon’s mountains, where you can take a refreshing dip in the local pools. This will also be our overnight stop.

We start our journey at 5:00 am with a direction towards the town of Cabanaconde (Pampa San Miguel). It will be an ascent hike of approximately 4 hours. Once we reach this village, we’ll have breakfast and start our return to the town of Chivay. During the journey, we’ll visit the terraces of Antahuilque, Wayrapunko, and the town of Maca. Here, you can see colonial churches, tombs, and pre-Inca terraces. We’ll make a brief stop in the town of Yanque, where you can access the hot springs (optional entry), with water temperatures ranging from 35°C to 38°C. You’ll have an average of 60 minutes to enjoy the hot springs. Then, we head to the town of Chivay, where you can appreciate its colonial architecture. You’ll also have lunch before we start the return to the city of Arequipa. During the journey, we’ll make a stop at the Patapampa viewpoint, from which you can see the Ampato, Sabancaya, and Hulca Hulca volcanoes (the highest point of our journey at 4800 meters above sea level). We’ll also stop at the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve, where you can spot vicuñas, alpacas, and llamas. We’ll arrive in the city of Arequipa at approximately 5:30 pm, leaving you near the Plaza de Armas.
